Broken Empire – After the Fall of the USSR
Yakutsk, Russia 2001. Accustomed to violent winters, women in the Sakha Republic keep warm in floor-length furs. Thanks to its rich natural resources, Russia's remote northern province harbors islands of prosperity - but not warmth. In January, the daily high in the capital, Yakutsk, averages minus 43°F.

Novokuznetsk, Russia 1992. Smoke from the KMK steel plant belches carbon monoxide above this Siberian city. By the early 1990's, pollution had impacted every major river in Russia, had left one quarter of the drinking water unsafe, and had cursed 35 million Russians with unhealthy air.

Novokuznetsk / Russia
When KMK was originally built by Stalin as a major production facility for bullets to fight the German invaders in World War II ecological aspects were not a priority. Driven by their quest for even higher productivity during the cold war era Soviet technocrats never allowed the situation to improve. The steel plant in Novokuznetsk still belches thick smoke into the Siberian sky.

According to firemen major oil fires in the Baku area ignite on average about once a week, caused by playing of children, default of powerlines, sparks from electric trains etc. Often, all that firemen can do is to try to extinguish the fire by throwing stones in the water in order to create some sort of waves.

Siauliai / Lithuania
Siauliai, a small town of about 80.000, in the center of Lithuania, was the largest soviet air base in Europe. The last Soviet military personnel left in 1993, leaving behind environmental damages which would cost up to $ 250 million to clean up. The largest threat to the environment comes from years of leaking kerosene tanks into the undergroung water system. It is that much kerosene that people have started to dig wells and ditches into the ground and collect about 600 liters of kerosene per day in total. The “kerosene-exploration” has become a commercial venture. Students or pensioners are employed to work in shifts around the clock, and a certain part of profit goes to local mafia. A teacher said that 2 days of collecting kerosene equals his monthly salary.

Atomic Lake, as it is known locally, shimmers in the midday air 65 miles southwest of Semey. To create a reservoir, a shallow underground device was detonated here in 1965. Large amounts of radiation were vented, exposing the downwind population. Over the years, the Soviets used scores of nuclear devices for other “peaceful” purposes like diamond mining and stanching oil-well fires.
