Several clusters of children with missing forearms were discovered in Moscow. All these hemi-melia births, as scientist call them, occured between 1985-1990 in two neighborhoods. Also no certain links can be drawn between these births defects and Moscow’s bewildering mix of pollutants (dioxin, military plants, trash incinerators etc), most scientific research points to pollution as a cause.

    Siauliai / Lithuania
Siauliai, a small town of about 80.000, in the center of Lithuania, was the largest soviet air base in Europe. The last Soviet military personnel left in 1993, leaving behind environmental damages which would cost up to $ 250 million to clean up. The largest threat to the environment comes from years of leaking kerosene tanks into the undergroung water system. It is that much kerosene that people have started to dig wells and ditches into the ground and collect about 600 liters of kerosene per day in total. The “kerosene-exploration” has become a commercial venture. Students or pensioners are employed to work in shifts around the clock, and a certain part of profit goes to local mafia. A teacher said that 2 days of collecting kerosene equals his monthly salary.

Atomic Lake, as it is known locally, shimmers in the midday air 65 miles southwest of Semey. To create a reservoir, a shallow underground device was detonated here in 1965. Large amounts of radiation were vented, exposing the downwind population. Over the years, the Soviets used scores of nuclear devices for other “peaceful” purposes like diamond mining and stanching oil-well fires.

Mirnyy is a center of diamond mining. On an average of once a week, the rock in the diamond pit is being exploded. The explosions release an orange cloud of dust and gases. Depending on wind and weather this cloud can remain in the pit for days causing a shut down of all work activities in the pit.

    Mirnyy / Russia
Mirnyy is a center of diamond mining. On an average of once a week, the rock in the diamond pit is being exploded. The explosions release an orange cloud of dust and gases. Depending on wind and weather this cloud can remain in the pit for days causing a shut down of all work activities in the pit.

More than the stifling smell, the air in Azerbaijan is laden with chemicals. Pollution from chemical plants is considered one of the leading causes of the breakdown of the immune system, especially in children. This boy died from this condition within an hour after the picture was taken.

In Kiev, a teen-aged girl's dermatitis coupled with balding is but one example of the increase of allergic diseases due to environmental conditions. She has suffered from the condition “as long as I can think back”. At an age when her girl friends start dating, she spends many weeks a year in the hospital for painful injections. “How can I not hate my body?” she asks.

The seashore has receded by nearly 50 miles leaving behind a dozen rusty shipwrecks locally referred to as the “graveyards of ships” in the once beautiful bay of the fishing village of Zhalanash. Moscow’s decision to irrigate huge cotton and rice crops from the lake’s two feeder rivers caused the Aral Sea to shrink to half of its former size.
