Picasso and Jacqueline left Vauvenargues and returned to La Californie within six months, but kept the château as a secret retreat. At La Californie, Jacqueline played a vital part in the artist's life, helping tirelessly and silently on canvas-signing days, until the final “K” (Kahnweiler) was printed on works for Paris. Early 1960s.

Several weeks after shooting the close-up of the artist’s eyes, David Douglas Duncan mounted two enlargements on canvases hoping Picasso would sign them, but he refused. He then picked up his sketch pad, tore out two pages, reached for his scissors and charcoal, and in a couple of minutes finished two self-portraits as an owl.
