Broad belts of pine and birch forest around the town of Monchegorsk are being destroyed by pollution from a nikel plant. Trees even dozens of miles away, die of acid rain and thus are susceptible to forest fires. Conservationists mark the few surviving trees in some parts of the forest with red flags and labels to monitor their survival.

This boy in the oncological department of the childrens hospital in Chelyabinsk was diagnosed with leukemia. The increase of children suffering from this condition is generally contributed to 3 major accidents in nuclear facilities in the nearby Techa River region. Still the hospital is fairly well equiped due to aid from the U.S. and Germany, so that the percentage of patients that could be saved from death was doubled.

Atomic Lake, as it is known locally, shimmers in the midday air 65 miles southwest of Semey. To create a reservoir, a shallow underground device was detonated here in 1965. Large amounts of radiation were vented, exposing the downwind population. Over the years, the Soviets used scores of nuclear devices for other “peaceful” purposes like diamond mining and stanching oil-well fires.

On winter Sundays many men drill holes in the ice of the Ural River for fishing just outside of the Lenin Steel Work although they know that the river is highly polluted by the plants waste water.

Moscow / Russia
Several clusters of children with missing forearms were discovered in Moscow. All these hemi-melia births, as scientist call them, occured between 1985-1990 in two neighborhoods. Also no certain links can be drawn between these births defects and Moscow’s bewildering mix of pollutants (dioxin, military plants, trash incinerators etc), most scientific research points to pollution as a cause.

Siauliai / Lithuania
Siauliai, a small town of about 80.000, in the center of Lithuania, was the largest soviet air base in Europe. The last Soviet military personnel left in 1993, leaving behind environmental damages which would cost up to $ 250 million to clean up. The largest threat to the environment comes from years of leaking kerosene tanks into the undergroung water system. It is that much kerosene that people have started to dig wells and ditches into the ground and collect about 600 liters of kerosene per day in total. The “kerosene-exploration” has become a commercial venture. Students or pensioners are employed to work in shifts around the clock, and a certain part of profit goes to local mafia. A teacher said that 2 days of collecting kerosene equals his monthly salary.

Baku / Azerbaïjan
According to firemen major oil fires in the Baku area ignite on average about once a week, caused by playing of children, default of powerlines, sparks from electric trains etc. Often, all that firemen can do is to try to extinguish the fire by throwing stones in the water in order to create some sort of waves.
