Sasha Obama stops by the Oval Office to say “Hi” to her dad. This was during the first few months at the White House and the President was still trying to find his way around.
He was impressed that his seven year-old found her own way there and insisted she could easily find her way back to the private residence, which she did.

Footballs, basketballs, soccer balls all provide a good way to unwind between meetings. They are almost his worry beads.
During the campaign football was common while waiting to be introduced at a rally: Obama would find a ball to palm or kick.
I also find that he is the one to bring humor into a situation. Some staff say that this is how they know he is confident about what he is tackling.

The White House is a beautiful museum that the First Family just happens to live in. They are a part of the museum. Five days a week tourists go through this room, right under their living space.
For a job where you are rarely alone, the office of the President can be one of the loneliest jobs.

President Obama reading over letters at his desk in the Oval Office one evening. I felt like everyone had seen photographs of the President in the Oval Office taken inside the room. I had not viewed many, or any, photographs taken at night looking in.
When I worked at the White House, under Vice President Gore, I loved to stand outside the Oval Office at night and look in. It always seemed so peaceful.

The Obamas listen to their daughter Malia talk about her day at school. The President had just finished a videotaping and ran into his wife and daughter. When he was a Senator he only saw his family on the weekend. When he was a candidate he would go a week or two without seeing them. It seems the best part of the White House is that he can drop in on his family or they on him.

In a room of 200 plus guests, the President seemed to tune out the world around him when he began to slow dance with his wife. This is a man who is madly in love with his wife. Every time he sees her on television he notes how beautiful she is. Every time he sees her face on a magazine cover he notes it again.
Michelle Obama throughout the campaign and into the White House has been his sanctuary, his best friend and confidant.
She has always been the one who pushed him back out there if his spirits got low.

Cabinet Room, The White House 2009.
He began as a community organizer dealing with one personal problem at a time, then later as a state senator dealing with one state. Things are very different when you become president. Your decisions affect a nation and usually the world. Obama, whether a positive to some or a negative to others, has always been someone to listen to all the issues, to weigh the effects of decisions made, at times remaining too calm and unemotional.
People ask me all the time if he has changed since becoming president. To me he has not changed so much as finally there is a place where his way of governing seems to work best. I do not know if you change so much when you become president or you adjust to the new surroundings. If you cannot adjust, you will not survive.

For me this photograph is important because I am not sure that even Abraham Lincoln could have believed that not only would a black President sit under his portrait but an entire table of black leaders.
This was a photograph, a moment, I had hoped for. Something that said times had changed in Washington.

Barack Obama waits in the wings to walk out and become the 44th President of the United States. Earlier in the week I asked him if he was nervous about his speech. He said "No, I have had it finished in my head for a while. This week is kind of like a wedding; you just got to get to the end."
I think he knew that his life would never be the same once he walked through the doors in front of him onto the stage and raised his right hand. But at the same time, you could tell he was ready to be president and just wanted to get to work.

Barack Obama and George W. Bush put on their coats to drive to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony of Barack Obama as President of the United States.
The newly elected President always has tea or coffee with the outgoing president on the morning of the inauguration at the White House. It was obvious that President Bush was ready to hand over the reins. He was even heard to say after the ceremony, "I am free at last." The Bushes were very gracious to the Obamas. They both appeared to be proud and happy that the Obamas would be moving into the White House.
I had worked at the White House under Bill Clinton and Al Gore. The mood at the reception could not have been more different than it was eight years earlier. I must say Bush was much more gracious to Obama than Gore but maybe eight years as President had humbled him some.

The United States economy was in a major decline and the stock market was reacting. The US Congress was reacting, but not as most wanted, and Obama spent a lot of time during these days on the phone trying to work out situations that both parties could agree on.
During the campaign, Obama was not one to sit still when he talked on the phone. He was always pacing. Walking the airport tarmac seemed a way for him to work out issues in his head.
This would end up being one of the big turning points in the final months of his campaign. Voters seemed impressed with how calm he stayed.

Senator Obama was doing press interviews by telephone in a holding room between events. Some time later, as he was getting ready to begin his event, he asked me if I was photographing his shoes. When I said yes, he told me that he had already had them resoled once since he entered the race a year earlier.

I loved it that he cleaned up after himself before leaving an ice cream shop in Iowa. He didn't have to. The event was over and the press had left. He was used to taking care of things himself and I think this is one of the qualities that make him different from so many other political candidates I've encountered.

With three rallies down and two more to go, Obama catches a quick nap on his campaign bus as it headed for Salem, NH. I asked him once when we were traveling through Illinois and he was about to fall asleep, if he cared if I took a picture. He said I was fine taking pictures until his jaw dropped. This night his jaw dropped after I took three frames.

These two boys waited as a long line of adults to greet the Senator before a rally on Martin Luther King Day. They never took their eyes off of him. Their grandmother told me "Our young men have waited a long time to have someone to look up to, to make them believe Dr. King's words can be true for them."

Senators Obama and Hillary Clinton participate in the Los Angeles Democratic Debate. During the campaign, tension between the two candidates and their staffs seemed pretty high, but they both eventually found their place and developed a strong and powerful working relationship. In the end each respected what the other brought to the table.

Obama listens from a back stairwell as he is introduced in Muscatine, Iowa. It was his second or third speech of the day. Unlike many of the politicians I have photographed, I found it is easy to get a photograph of him alone. He let his staff do their jobs and not fuss over him.

I made this picture in October of 2006 during the Illinois State races. Just three of us in a car. Senator Obama, a friend of his who was driving and me. I don't think you could make this picture now. He had stopped at a rest area along the back roads. There are no secret service agents, no staff, no motorcade or traveling press corps. It is a sharp contrast to the 100,000 person crowd in St. Louis, Missouri that turned out to see him exactly two years later.

It was primary morning in New Hampshire. They had been campaigning separately all week. In the first few months of 2008 their private time seemed to consist of a few crossover moments in back hallways before rallies. That morning I could tell they just loved being able to sit together.
