Enemies of the People | Laos
More than three decades after the Vietnam War, there is still no peace for the ethnic Hmong people who collaborated with the American and French military forces in neighboring Laos. Over 18 000 Hmong men and boys formed Special Guerilla units trained by the CIA to conduct secret battles against Communist troops and rescue American pilots shot down during bombing runs over the Ho Chi Minh Trail. When the U.S. was defeated and the Communists took power in Laos, the CIA sent a plane to airlift out the top Hmong officers and their families. Tens of thousands were left behind; some escaped to refugee camps in Thailand, while others fled into the jungle. The Lao People's Army continues to hunt them to this day. Aging Hmong veterans and their families live as impoverished, desperate groups, eating roots to survive, constantly on the run, targeted by army attacks.
