TABRIZ / IRAN / 1980 : Manifestation en faveur de l’ayatollah Shariat Madari. Des manifestants déchirent le portrait de Khomeiny. De violents incidents entre partisans des deux ayatollahs (Khomeiny et Sharia Madari) éclatent le 4 janvier 1980 à Tabriz, capitale de l’Azerbaïdjan iranien et région natale de Shariat Madari. Les incidents redoublent d’intensité après l’exécution, le 12 janvier, de 11 membres du parti républicain musulman qui invoquaient le nom de Shariat Madari assigné à résidence à Qom. Shariat Madari, ayatollah politiquement modéré, soutient le mouvement révolutionnaire mais s’éloigne rapidement de ses prises de positions radicales. En 1982, il est déchu de son titre de « grand ayatollah ». Il n’est plus considéré comme un modèle pour les croyants ». Il meurt en 1986.
